Quartz vs. granite in a Hampton Roads kitchen
Humidity, salt air and busy families. Here is how the two stones really hold up on the coast.
The short answer
Quartz is the lower-maintenance choice for most families: it never needs sealing and it resists stains from coffee, wine and turmeric. Granite wins if you want one-of-a-kind natural movement and don't mind sealing it once a year.
Heat and sun
Granite shrugs off a hot pan. Quartz uses resin, so always use a trivet. In sunrooms or kitchens with big west-facing windows, some quartz colours can fade over many years. Granite won't.
Coastal living
Salt air doesn't hurt either stone, but sealed granite and quartz both beat marble near the water. If you love the marble look, a Calacatta-style quartz gives you the veining without the etching.
Cost
