The curbless shower: what it takes to get that spa look
No step, no curb, just one continuous floor. Here is what goes on under the tile.
Why people love it
A curbless shower makes a bathroom feel twice the size, looks like a high-end hotel, and is safer as you get older. No tripping over a curb at 2 a.m.
The hidden work
The floor has to slope toward the drain, so we often recess the subfloor between the joists. A linear drain along the back wall lets us use big tiles with a single slope.
Waterproofing is everything
We use a full bonded waterproofing membrane across the whole wet area, flood-test it for 24 hours, and only then set tile. This is the step cheap bids skip.
Glass
A single fixed panel of low-iron glass keeps the look clean. Most showers over about 4 feet deep don't even need a door.
